My termite estimates vary a lot. How do I choose?
It’s a good idea to get several estimates. First of all, rule out any company that bids without inspecting your property. And, don’t consider companies that use scare tactics or rush you to make a decision. Termites can do a lot of damage, but they work slowly. It’s okay to take time to make the right decision.
You should also know that termite companies must use treatments that are state-approved. No one company has a “magic” treatment that works better than another.
Ask each company to provide you with the linear or cubic feet being treated. Also ask for an itemized estimate that separates their chemical fee and their labor fee. This way, you’ll be able to see how much each company charges for both. If they won’t itemize, you can calculate the chemical costs yourself. Barbara Ogg and Dennis Ferraro of the University of Nebraska – Lincoln provide calculation how-to’s in Termites Bite into the Pocketbook
Finally, be sure to choose a company that is licensed by your state and one that is well-established. Ask for references and check them. Make sure that the company you are considering carries insurance. And, find out about the technician performing the work. How long has he been working in this profession? Has he received special training or certification?
Before you sign, make sure you understand the warranty being offered. Does it replace subsequent termite damage or offer to treat areas again if needed?
