I’m having my house tented for termites. How do I prepare?
Ask your termite company for a specific checklist to help you prepare for
tenting. In general, you will need to contact your utility company and schedule
your gas to be shut off during fumigation. (The termite inspection service may do
this for you, be sure to ask.) Electricity must remain on.
You will also need to remove all houseplants and cut back or remove plants,
climbers, bushes that are near or clinging to your home. You may also be asked to
water around the perimeter of your house the night before the fumigation.
You will need to bag or remove all medicines and food from your home, including
food stored in your refrigerator and freezer. Cosmetics and toiletries must also
be double bagged or removed. Ask your termite company about specially designed bags,
which they can provide.
Plan to have house keys available, including keys to any locked areas, like
attached garages.
You may be asked to remove antennas from the roof, if you have them.
All pets and people must vacate the home. So, you’ll need to make arrangements
for pets and household members to stay elsewhere during fumigation – usually you
should allow for two nights away.
